What about tomorrow
Today we are continuously exposed to risk factors which affect us on a daily basis and will increasingly affect us in the future if no measures are taken by the individuals. Have you been reading the news lately? Are you aware of the big risk factors which can lead our beloved earth to collapse? Are you aware of what is happening to the climate? In this section we want to provide you with tips which can help live a more sustainable and environmentally free life :)

The profile of risk changed due to many factors, including science and technology, as well as social awareness. The risks which society faces today are mainly environmental risks, wealth risks and health risks. Over the past three decades new kind of risks emerged through the success of industrialization. Us, the people, have been able to point out and determine risks and its leading factors to have a sense of control over them and give explanations. As a result, everyone of us should be aware of the possible risk factors, and take action upon them by living pro-sustainable life.

Whether it means changing food habits, avoiding excessive use of cars and planes, or using environmentally free products, we should all come together and give as much input as possible as ONE.
Modern exercises

The key to self control
As we previously talked about risks in society and how dutch people like to avoid uncertainty (in chapter two), we have an interesting exercise for you - Martial arts

Wix image
Martial arts are ancient forms of combat, adjusted for modern sport and exercise, which promote remarkably stronger overall development of motor abilities in comparison to other forms of physical activity (Podstawski, 2013). Key terms for martial arts are self-control, body control and discipline (Lakes & Hoyt, 2004). Martial arts have existed for more than 3000 years and have hundreds of different styles (Lakes & Hoyt, 2004).
Martial arts are associated with self-defence, however practising it develops various skills one may need to survive in a given environment (Podstawski, 2013).

There is no doubt that self-defence and being aware of your body can be a great help for you. Especially for young people who have moved to a new environment, being able to defend yourself can make you feel much safer in our current society. Furthermore, it is a great exercise too and you cannot get bored, there are so many different styles to try. We have included some links for you to find martial art classes, but you can also ask from your school - schools may often offer self-defence and boxing classes.

FAMILY MEALS - Mango Salsa Taco with Waxworms
As you know, in this era we try to do our best to take care of our environment. And one of those ways is to reduce nitrogen pollution. The two major sources of nitrogen pollution to the air are fossil fuel combustion (e.g. vehicle and power plant emissions) and agriculture (e.g. fertilizer and manure emissions) (Hubbard Brook Research Foundation, 2002). A big factor of the nitrogen pollution comes from livestock and to reduce that, we look for a more friendly way to eat a healthy meal.
That is why we introduce you the wax worm tacos! It contains a lot of fiber, fat, protein and calcium.

This might be the next food trend when we try to reduce our meat eating ways!

Cooking step by step
Step 1: Combine the following ingredients: corn, beans, onions, garlic, cilantro, peppers (fresh and ground), lemon juice, olive oil. Mix, then add mangos, tomatoes, avocados and stir carefully.
Step 2: Euthanize, boil, and roast waxworms, if you haven't already. The easiest way to boil something small like waxworms is to bring water in a small pot to a rolling boil, then place waxworms in a fine mesh stainless steel strainer, and lower into boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Then, all you need to do it lift the strainer out of the boiling water, and rinse the waxworms, still in the strainer, with cool water, then spread out to dry. To roast, preheat oven to 160 Celsius, and spread waxworms over a pan or piece of tin foil. You don't need any oil, they are fatty enough. Roast in the oven for 10-15 minutes until they are fragrant, and lightly crispy and dry to the touch. Set aside.
Step 3: If you are not using hard taco shells, warm the tortillas in your favorite manner. This can be as easy as popping them in the microwave, or using tongs to hold them over something steaming, tossing them in the oven with the roasting waxworms,or flash in the pan. Heat up some oil in a pan over medium heat, then toss each tortilla in just long enough for it to brown, flipping it once. When tortillas are warm and pliable, keep in a tortilla warmer, until ready to eat.

Too good to go
Waste warriors
In the Netherlands, 34 kg of edible food per person per year is lost or wasted. (voedingscentrum.nl) That is 9 % of the Dutch food intake per year.

People go hungry while some place else good edible food ends up in the bin

Too good to go
When you think about it, it is really sad right? 1/3 of all the food in the world is wasted.
The sad truth is, companies have to make more food than they can sell. Why? To satisfy our need. Because when they don't have enough we start to complain and go less and less. That is why they have to make a little bit more than they actually sell. Just in case.
But what about the remaining food? Most likely will end up in the bin because no one sells something that is "overdue".

For many reasons we need to change and find sustainable solutions for the future of our planet.
Luckiliy there is an app; Too-Good-To-Go. The commercial catch phrase of this app is to appeal to people who hate waste: the “waste warriors”. The logo of green leafs emphasises the “saving nature and the planet” goal of the Danish company.
The app offers food, which almost reaches the expiration date or for other reasons cannot be sold to customers anymore, all for one third of the original price. Meals, food and fruit that normally would have to be thrown away at the end of the day is offered for prices that differ between € 3,99 and € 4,99. For this you get a “Magic Box” filled with food products or meals from a bakery, a supermarket, a restaurant, hotel or any other associated company.

Too good to go
The online platform has saved a million meals from the bin this year so far (NVRD). For students it’s a great app. Most students in dormitories buy and eat together. For them to share a Magic Box is profitable and healthy, while they’re doing good and fight waste at the same time.
However the Magic Box is not yet available everywhere in the Netherlands, but its popularity is rapidly growing. The trend to fight food waste by offering it for reduced prices is now also being tested at Albert Heijn; one of the leading supermarkets in the Netherlands. Dynamic pricing seems to be the magic formula.
Responsible buying and selling of fresh food is going to be the trend for the future.
Exploring the world
In a green way
Another important subject which is chasing us nowadays is the emission of Co2 in the world which causes the global warming around the world (Anderson, T.R. 2016). Global warming is an example of risk society. If we do not take any action climate change will increase which will affect all of us.
Co2 emission is caused by many factors such as livestock farming, transport, industry and so on. As you probably already know the Co2 emission of transport is increasing, in particular in air transport(D. Thrän, J. Ponitka, 2016).
So why are you telling me this?
What can I do about that?
Well you can do something!

EU environment agency
As you can see from the table of the European Environment Agency, the air travelling has the highest amount of CO2 emission from every transport option. Compare that to rail transport and you will see that the CO2 emission is 95% less compared to air travel. Crazy right?!
The funny thing is that people still go by plane instead of train when they travel between places in Europe, although there are a lot of options to travel by train to certain cities in Europe.
Our message to you would be to think about this way of travelling and understand that there is a way to help reduce global warming and climate change.
Plan a nice trip to a city in Europe, look for train tickets and go on an adventure! Interrailing is so much fun!
For more information about interrailing and the price of train tickets you can take a look on this website: https://www.interrail.eu/
Enjoy your trip!
